Grace Meng, NY Assemblywomen, proposed legislation would eliminate the use of the term Oriental in documents used by state, public and city agencies when talking about people with an Asian or Pacific Islander heritage. I’m glad these types of issues are being addressed. It might not seem like such a big deal, but it’s definitely a step forward to bringing proper identification to Asian-Americans.
I’m not sure why people in the 21st century would still use this word. For anyone who’s unaware, the term “oriental” is a completely archaic term to call an individual. You don’t call someone of Asian descent oriental just like you wouldn’t call someone of African descent a negro (unless you want your front teeth knocked off). I kid… Sure, you can call a lamp an “oriental lamp” but being categorized with home appliances isn’t very flattering.
